I recently performed at the George Payne Open Mic hosted by talented singer-songwriter and all-round good guy James Brett. It's located in deepest, darkest Hove where you can sample beverages like 'Smoked Lager' - so if you fancy an alcoholic drink which tastes like rashers of bacon, this is the pub for you.
Topping the bill was featured act Matthew Bee. His style is somewhere between folk and Foo Fighters so kudos for having a go at Gloria Gaynor's 'I will Survive'. Okay, so he didn't survive the song (he forgot the lyrics and gave up half way through, and was then accosted by a fan of Gaynor). But if you don't push the boat out, how will you ever discover new (musical) lands?
I *wowed the crowd with four songs: A Place for the Crazy, Lightspeed Dater, Into The Ether and To New Horizons.
By way of self-critique: I played at too fast a tempo. It was my first open mic for a while - I've been busy writing a new song called 'The White Light'. It's taken me months! It starts like this:
I was awoken by the crying, the screaming, the laughter, the shrieking
And by the choke
I opened my eyes to this God-forsaken world
All shadow, flame and smoke
So anyways, I was a little rusty, but it was good to get back out there. Other performers on the bill included:
- Paul Beresford: the ol' heart-breaker delivering a set of beautiful sentiment.
- Paul Glock: majestic foot-stomping folk (but not his left foot - it was in a cast).
- Break the Fable: slick three-piece delivering catchy tunes and groovy bass while blocking access to the toilet behind them.
- James Brett: the host showing everyone how it's done with Brit-pop inspired tunes.
I'll be back here again at some point. Time to practice some more and get back to recording some stuff too. More on that soon.
* People clapped politely
